Historical research; metric and photographic surveys; material, technology, structural, deterioration, and damage investigations; stratigraphic analyses and laboratory testing; preliminary, definitive, and executive design phases.

The project

The project envisages residential and hotel developments without any new construction, fully respecting the existing historic fabric. The spatial layout was preserved throughout, despite the insertion of bathrooms, kitchens, and plant and sewage systems.
The design approach for consolidating the existing structures, many of which were close to collapse, and for restoring the preserved finishes through conservation methods, was particularly challenging.
In addition to the architectural design, a restoration and partial upgrading project was developed for the narrow roadway, which remains unchanged in width and functions as a one-way street with passing bays, connecting the historic core to nearby settlements.
The project progressed through three phases: preliminary, definitive, and executive design. The project was not realized.

Design documentation

Detailed analytical surveys; documentation of constituent materials, construction techniques, and macroscopic analysis of deterioration; preliminary, definitive, and executive designs including plans, elevations, and sections at scales of 1:100, 1:50, 1:20, and 1:5; preliminary restoration and upgrading design of the existing road up to its connection with the provincial road network.

Design Phase Duration

Preliminary design: 30 days; definitive design: 85 days; executive design: 115 days.
