The Project
The aim of the intervention is the restoration of the facades of the West Wing, currently affected by deterioration phenomena. The works have a dual purpose: to secure the facades against possible detachment and falling of materials from the cornices and to restore the entire West Wing to its proper decorum by reinstating its original appearance.
The general approach particularly applies to the restoration of facade materials and finishes, which play a significant role in the image and very substance of a monumental building such as the Kurhaus. In this case, as mentioned above, the goal is to recover the original appearance of the facades, especially in terms of color and the material textures of the plasters and stuccoes that most characterize them.
These transformations will mainly involve these finishes and will consist primarily of removing layers deemed incongruous to reveal the original ones. The original finishes have already been identified through macroscopic visual inspections (critical survey), micro-stratigraphic, and mineralogical-petrographic analyses. They will be subject to restoration works that, depending on their condition and preservation status, may include appropriate specific treatments such as preliminary consolidation, demolition of irrecoverable parts, consolidation, cleaning, filling of gaps, material reintegration of surfaces, chromatic harmonization (i.e., repainting), and possible protection.
The project also includes the removal of some incongruous elements, such as travertine slabs cladding part of the base of the north facade, and the addition of new elements, such as protective flashings (as foreseen in the Preliminary Design Document) and a new anti-pigeon system.
