The Project

Severely degraded and modified by numerous alterations to its layout and load-bearing masonry, the Complex was restored to its original spatial configuration through an in-depth analysis of archival documents, photographic records, and iconographic materials. On-site investigations facilitated, among other discoveries, the identification of the original location and remnants of the grand staircase at the northeast corner, which, together with the existing vertical connections, serves as the central axis for the organized distribution along the four sides of the perimeter. This distribution consists of three corridors overlooking the cloister, with the fourth situated along the median axis of a triple-volume structure. Although original materials were scarce, they were sufficient to guide the integrations, which were executed using traditional techniques for the floors, walls, ceilings, and other building elements. The Complex now houses one of the campuses of the IUAV University of Venice. The commission, encompassing construction management and entrusted by the Municipality and the IUAV University of Venice, spanned over thirty years, and the restoration has now been completed.
